Description of: Up And Down To Victory by Stephen C. Small
Up And Down To Victory, is an autobiography written pseudonymously as the names
have been changed in telling what is a real life story of a Black man living in the United
States of America. The book is written to accentuate humanity and the presence of
divine and demonic entities in the lives of Black people struggling to live in America.
The writer contends that we live in a composite world, a world where we are not alone.
Up And Down To Victory is replete with testimonies; it testifies to the presence of
gardian spirits working in the writer’s everyday living and life. America is a crucible of
ethnicity and culture, of right and wrong ideas and ways of life. The writer shares how
spiritual awareness was always present in his struggle to live, lear, and find fulfilment.
Therefore, the writer reflects through lenses of grace, i.e., the grace that permeates the
entire cosmos. The grace finds the writer over and over again saving, restoring, and
renewing his will to live. The writer does not believe he would have survived without the
help of gardian spirits. And so, Up And Down To Victory advocates for forgiveness, for
resilience, for courage, for humanity. Amid a life of corruption, confusion, and calamity;
Up And Down To Victory holds nothing back; it is a real story.
Being Black in America is a journey, the roads are long and the dangers are without
number. My story told by America will only address what happened and is happening
on the surface. What is on the surface is simply not true; itis a lie that facilitates
doctrines of chattel slavery, and the notion that Black people are not human beings.
Whether good or bad, believable or not, the story is worth telling. The writer believes it
is impossible to understand Black life in America absent spirituality. And so, Up And
Down To Victory, is spiritual, truthful and historical.
